The 1960's Gamera movies are back on DVD. While Toho's dinosaur-mutated Godzilla was stomping the city of Tokyo majestically, Daiei Studios came up with an idea to base their huge monster on a different animal. The result was Gamera,
the two-eyed no-horned flying turtle people eater, who didn't actually eat people much but breathed fire like any decent educated gigantic flying monster should. "Kame" means "turtle" in Japanese, and the studio executives wanted to call
their creation "Kamera" at first (true story) but somebody pointed out that it might sound too much like those apparatus carried by Japanese tourists, so they changed it a bit, and the rest is history. This boxed set #1 contains the first 4 Gamera flicks: Gamera (Daikaiju Gamera, 1965), Gamera vs. Barugon (1966), Gamera vs. Gaos (1967) & Gamera vs. Viras (1968)
