Set in the English countryside in the late 17th century, Mr. Neville, a young draughtsman (Anthony Higgins), is hired by Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) to create 12 elaborate sketches of her estate as a gift to her husband, in return for money and sexual favours. This simple arrangement soon spirals out of control and Mr. Neville finds himself as the prime suspect in a bizarre murder mystery.
