From deep within the Himalayas, a brilliant young monk named Tashi returns to the world after three years of solitary meditation in a remote hermitage. At a harvest festival, he meets the beautiful Pema (Christy Chung), and chooses to quit monastic life for the challenges and wonders of the wider world. But marriage to Pema brings sorrow as well as joy, and his spiritual quest amid the tribulations of everyday life is very different from what Tashi has been accustomed to. He soon finds himself at a mental crossroads, and is eventually forced to choose either his love or his faith.
