Based on a true story, the film takes place in Bosnia in 1993, and it masterfully conveys the brutality of the war. Some critics faulted it for not taking a political stand, for being a generic war movie that didn't explore the historical context of the conflict, as if it were a documentary. What it's really about is the depths of hatred to which a person can be driven, what evil he's capable of at those depths, and, most importantly, what it takes to save him. What it takes is the humanity of others, and what the film ultimately does best is show the humanity that persists even in the midst of such horror.
