IVAN THE TERRIBLE 1 is the first half of Sergei Eisensteins epic chronicle of the 16th Century Tsar. On a superficial level, the film most closely resembles its directors previous feature (and only other sound film), ALEXANDER NEVSKY, in that both depict a figure from Russian history. But PART 1 and its sequel are strikingly different from each other. When observed separately and together, they remain products of a creative talent that refused to lay dormant, that was constantly questioning, exploring, experimenting - and evolving.Eisenstein began work on IVAN THE TERRIBLE in 1940 and spent over two years methodically researching the Tsars life and times. Every sequence was carefully visualized: the filmmaker executed hundreds of drawings representing his conceptions of how the film would look. Just as you are seizing from the passing figures in your imagination a characteristic bend of Tsar Ivans back in the confessional, he wrote during his preparation for the film, you must drop your pencil and take up your pen to sketch the dialogue for the scene, and before the ink of this is dry, your pencil is once more making a note of an image that came to you during the dialogue - of a priests long, white hair descending like a canopy over the Tsars graying head. Before this mood is finished, you find yourself drawing with your pen and penciling notes for the dialogue - on the sheets of drawings.
