Covertext One of cinema history's greatest filmmakers, Preston Sturges was the first Hollywood writer to direct his own script and went on an unparalleled creative streak that brought to the screen some of the most beloved films of all time. Now, for the first time ever, seven of the best films written and directed by Academy Award winner Preston Sturges are available in one highly collectible set, including four films never-before-available on DVD.

The Great McGinty: Depression-era bum Dan McGinty, intrigued by the offer of quick cash for ballot stuffing, makes himself a hobo’s fortune while securing a reputation among local politicians as an adept scam man. Encouraging his talents, a crooked political boss grooms McGinty from a lowly bill collector to State Governor. Needing a wife for public appearance sake, McGinty weds his secretary. Taken with his new family, the rising leader discovers a desire for reform. Soon, McGinty’s vengeful cronies are scheming to keep him from exposing the unethical side of local government.

Christmas in July: A go-getter clerk in a coffee company is fooled into thinking he's won a $25,000 prize for inventing a sales slogan. When a trio of practical jokers at Maxford Coffee send him a phony congratulatory telegram
announcing that he's the contest winner, the clerk and his girlfriend go off on a mammoth Christmas shopping binge, even though it's the middle of July. Suddenly, the head of Maxford Coffee discovers the mistake, and their spending spree turns into a wild slapstick riot.

The Lady Eve: She’s a calculating card shark who fleeces passengers on transatlantic ocean liners. When she discovers that an ingenious young millionaire is on board, the scheming card-shark figures he’ll be a
pushover if she plays her cards right. Sure enough, he does fall for her, but surprise-she also falls for him. When he’s tipped off that true romance is not in the cards because she’s giving him a fast shuffle, his fondness fades. Now she realizes that if she wants to win him back, she’s got to stop her double-dealing, and she does but not before she turns up a few tricks of her own.

Sullivan's Travels: A successful Hollywood director John L. Sullivan, is an idealist who believes you can’t accurately direct a screen tragedy unless you live it first. Disguising himself as a bum, Sullivan sets off to see America from the bottom up. Along the way he befriends a beautiful but cynical stray, and learns about the cruelty of life among the less fortunate. In the midst of the brutality and despair, the young director makes a valuable discovery – that what the downtrodden need most is laughter.

Palm Beach Story: In a seemingly amicable agreement, a frustrated wife of a struggling engineer, hops a train to Palm Beach where divorces come easy. Desperate to escape a group of obnoxious millionaires on the train to Florida, she hides out in a sleeping car where she meets, unbeknownst to her, one of the world's richest men who is relentless in his attempt to romance her. Upon their arrival in Palm Beach, she is met by her husband who has come to claim her back only to find that the millionaire's man-crazy sister is after him! The foursome's story unfolds through intensely humorous dialogue, flirtatious situations and a splendid soundtrack.

The Great Moment: It’s the story of Dr. William Morton, a dedicated physician who discovers ether in 1846 when he successfully anesthetizes William Demarest, who barely lives to talk about it. Until that time, all surgeries –
even amputations – were performed with the patient fully conscious. The octor’s great contributions to humanity, and later tribulations as he shares his knowledge rather than hoarding it for monetary reward.

Hail the Conquering Hero: Born on the day his father died a hero in WWI, Woodrow Layfayette Pershing Truesmith enlists proudly when World War II begins. Although anxious to serve his country, Woodrow is quickly discharged
because of his chronic hay fever. Ashamed to return to his home and his girlfriend, he takes a shipyard job while his buddies forward home his letters from the “Pacific.” How the “conquering hero” overcomes his friends, his hometown’s political cronies and the mayor’s son makes for another great satire on the American penchant for hero worship.
