Covertext FANDO Y LIS
Banned in Mexico, a permanent cause celebre, surrealist "fabulador"Alejandro Jodorowsky's unique career began with this bizarre tale of corrupted innocence, sadomasochistic love and unattainable paradise. Created from hazy memories of the controversial Fernando Arrabal play he staged in Paris, Jodorowsky's sublime frea-out follows impotent Fando and his paraplecig sweetheart Lis searching for the enchanted city of Tar where spiritual exstasy resides. The astonishing road trip takes them througth urban rubble, scalding deserts, treacherous mountains, their own pasts and close encounters of the weirdest kind in Jodorowky's seminal signature work of startling provocation and incendiary art.

EL TOPO
This violent and allegorical Mexican western attracted a cult following in its day. It is the story of El Topo, a gunslinger who sets out for revenge against the outlaws who slew his wife. He ends up getting his revenge and saving the life of a woman who is being terrorized by bandits. She leads El Topo (which means "the Mole" in English) on a search for the region's top four gunfighters. But before they set off, Topo leaves his young son in a monastery. He and the woman hook up with another female and begin their search. During one battle, El Topo is wounded and the women leave him to die. His comatose body is found by a strange group of cave dwelling people who take him to their subterranean home. He does not wake up for many years. When he does, he is enlisted to help the clan dig an escape tunnel. Later they come to a tiny town where the residents belong to a weird religious cult and El Topo's son has become a monk. The townsfolk are terrorized by a sadistic sheriff. When the clan members come into the town, the stage is set for a blood-soaked tragedy.

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN
A Christlike figure wanders through bizarre, grotesque scenarios filled with religious and sacrilegious imagery. He meets a mystical guide who introduces him to six wealthy and powerful individuals, each representing a planet in the solar system. These six, along with the protagonist, the guide and the guide's assistant, divest themselves of their worldly goods and form a group of nine who will seek out the Holy Mountain, in order to displace the gods who live there and become immortal.

Special Features
  • La Cravate - 1957
  • In 1957 Jodorowsky took his first steps in the world of the moving image by filming a silent version of Thomas Mann's The Transposed Heads - A Legend of India in Paris. This 35-minute short film, La Cravate, was considered lost for fifty years until its discovery in a German attic in 2006. "It is about a girl who sells heads. She changes the heads of a poetical guy and a boxer. She puts the spiritual head on the stong body and the idiot head on the spiritual body. And each head (then) changes its body. I (Jodorowsky) am saying 'you are not a body who has a spirit, you are a spirit who has a body.'"
  • La Constellation - Jodorowsky
  • A 90 minute documenatry on the life and art of Alejandro Jodorowsky. Includes interviews with Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Marcel Marceau & Peter Gabriel.
