Life has been difficult for crippled Yasu (Hirohito Honda from Battle Royale), bound to a wheelchair. His Mother has vanished. His Father and Brother think he’s crazy and his Sister shelters him from the “outside” world. Yet Yasu is about to learn the real meaning of suffering after a neighborhood family is violently murdered and two relatives, a mute Grandmother (Yoshiko Shiraishi) and her ghostly pale Granddaughter (Naoko Mori), mysteriously arrive at his doorstep and move in.
Labeled “The Japanese Chainsaw Massacre” (minus the chainsaws) by fans, director Shugo Fujii has fashioned a stylishly mysterious horror film sequences that are hommage tributes to the works of directors Brian De Palma and Alfred Hitchcock, while still remaining true to director Shugo’s roots in Japanese horror. Filled with moments of sheer terror, Living Hell joins the ranks along side The Ring (Ringu) and Ju-on (The Grudge) as another modern masterpiece of Asian horror cinema.
