In a village in the Thirunelveli District, young lovers struggle to overcome the barriers to be with each other placed on them by tradition and religion. Shekhar, a young Hindu, and Shaila Bano, a Muslim girl, fall in love at first sight. When both of their families object to their getting married, they elope and move to Bombay. They live happily there, along with their two young sons, until their lives are forever changed as the Bombay riots begin to erupt.
