The setting is Hong Kong, 1962.
Chau (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) and his wife have just moved into a Shanghainese building, where he meets Li-chun (Maggie Cheung), who lives next door and has moved in on the very same day. Coincidentally, they have both completed the move without any assistance from their spouses. With their mates always away on business, the two neighbors frequently cross paths and develop a friendship and begin spending more and more time together. One day, they both make shocking discoveries regarding their spouses, but the realization that they are are falling for each other has a much greater impact.
