From Mamoru Oshii, the world-acclaimed director of Ghost in the Shell comes an award-winning story of an exciting but endless war with heroes too young to understand the reality of their battles.
A group of eternally young fighter pilots known as Kildren experience the sudden loss of innocence as they battle the enemy in astonishing dogfights above the clouds. With his only childhood memory consisting of intense flight training, the fearless teenage pilot Yuichi's dogfights coexist with his struggle to find his missing past. When his beautiful, young female commander Suito is reluctant to discuss the fate of the pilot that Yuichi is replacing - or the strangely perfect condition of that pilot's former aircraft - Yuichi's curiosity becomes heightened.
Directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), Sky Crawlers is an animated sci-fi/action film based on a best-selling Japanese novel. It was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 65th Venice Film Festival. The story unfolds in an alternate reality and follows a group of young fighter pilots involved in dogfight warfare. These pilots, called "Kildren," are humanoids genetically designed to live in eternal adolescence. The Kildren compete in air shows as part of a commercial war organized by adults for entertainment during peacetime. The story follows Yuichi, a fighter pilot who arrives at his newly assigned airbase with only a vague memory of his past. He soon befriends the base commander, a woman named Kusanagi Suito, and as their relationship grows he comes to realize his inescapable fate as a Kildren fighter pilot. In the process, he will confront his ultimate enemy and discover the secrets of the Kildren.
