In this world, there exist Alchemists who have the ability to transmute and transform the structure of objects. However, the basic rule of alchemy states that for every gain there is an equivalent cost, and there are laws to be followed.
When Al and Edward (sons of a famous alchemist) lose their mother, they attempt the forbidden. Human alchemy. When the experiment fails, Al loses his body, and in a moment of panic Edward transfers his brother's soul into a large suit of armor.
Edward himself loses an arm and a leg, a costly reminder of what has happened. After he is equipped with mechanical replacements for his missing limbs, Ed sets off with all on a life altering, dangerous quest to find the Philosopher's Stone, the mythical magical object that holds the power to restore everything the brothers have lost.
