Set in New England in the early '70s, the unlikely love story revolves around a young man (Gyllenhaal) who finds himself lingering in the family home of his fiancee after her accidental death. While grieving along with her parents (Hoffman and Sarandon) and being drawn into the legal issues presented by a district attorney (Hunter) seeking justice for the family, Joe finds himself falling in love with another woman (Pompeo), against his own best intentions. Joe is torn between fulfilling the role of the bereaved son-in-law he believes he's meant to be playing and following his own heart.
