In 1973, Kim Dae-jung was a strong opposition leader against then-president Park Chung-hee. When Korea was placed under martial law Kim fled to Japan as a political exile where he continued his opposition of Park while calling for the reunification of the two Koreas. KT is based on the actual 1973 abduction of Kim Dae-Jung from a Tokyo hotel where he was living. Five days after he disappeared, Kim was found uninjured near his home in Seoul. Early reports suggested that Korean and Japanese agencies may have cooperated in the kidnapping and later the Korean government confirmed that the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) had been involved. KCIA agents received orders from Park for the "KT" (Killing the Target) Mission: the kidnapping and/or elimination of Kim Dae-jung.
