Its 1944 in the middle of World War II. A japanese Naval Offiver (Toshiro Mifune) looks around the small Pacific Island, that he alone has inhabited, to find a yellow life raft near the beach. It belongs to a U.S. Marine Fighter (Lee Marvin) whose plane has been shot down offshore. At any other time, these two men would have helped each other, but they are at war and stalk each other like enemies. Eventually, the Japanese captures the American overcomes and takes him prosioner. But the American finds no satisfaction in torturing the Japanese, and soon sets him free. They declare an unspoken truce to join forces and build a raft to help them reach a group of distant islands. Can these two enemies really look beyond their allegiances and put aside the savageness of war to work together?
