The great Federico Fellini pays loving homage to the world of small-time entertainers, those who shine in the shadow of the great stars--people such as Amelia Bonetti and Pippo Botticella who have made a life impersonating Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Ginger and Fred.
Amelia Bonetti (Giulietta Masina) and Pippo Botticella (Marcello Mastroianni) enjoyed a minor celebrity some years ago as dancers impersonating the great Astaire and Rogers. But in the years since, they have never attained the fame or success they both aspired to. Now, a television variety show offers the pair a spot--an ephemeral hope for a comeback to which Bonetti desperately grasps. But the time for these two, who once looked and danced so much like Astaire and Rogers, has long passed in this bittersweet, nostalgic look at dreams the might have been.
