In the third part of HUMAN CONDITION, Kaji (Tetsuyo Nakadai) is the sole surviving member of his unit and surrenders to the advancing Soviet Army. He is hoping for a better treatment than he received in his own army during wartime, but instead he is accused of murder and threatened with execution. He must escape his captors. He tries to regain his freedom, crossing a desolate field in the midst of a blizzard where he dies. Although HUMAN CONDITION won numerous awards and received a rousing critical reception, it was also an inherently controversial movie within Japan, whose government had never fully achnowledged the brutality and sagage acts of its army in Manchuria-the final section of A SOLDIERS PRAYER didnt get released in the United States until 1970, nine years after it was made.
