This moving drama (with an all-star cast) comes highly recommended.
Manisha Koirala is superb in her portrayal of Vaidehi on her quest for self-empowerment. Some very heavy statements are made in regards to the "Woman's role" in India, as well as around the world; both historically and in the present day. Very serious points are well made, with a few top-notch dance numbers and a fair share of levity.
Lajja is a journey of self-discovery. Vaidehi (Manisha Koirala) travels from the opulent city of New York to the remote and poor village of Uttar Pradesh. She becomes a rebel for the woman's cause, as she finds that everywhere she goes and turns, a woman must face mankind at its worst. As she continues her journey, she meets women that feel the same way she does. Vaidehi wonders why her womb is the only weapon she has. Maithili wonders why she should bend her head humiliatingly, just because she is a daughter. Janki wonders why society crushes her desire to live on her own terms. Over the long haul, Vaidehi comes to believe that only by revolt will anything be done. And when her tears stop falling, her revolution begins.
