A story about three homecoming veterans: ex-sergeant Fredric March, former bomber pilot Dana Andrews, and regular G.I. Harold Russell. Having rubbed shoulders with blue-collar Joes for the first time in his life, March finds it difficult to return to a banker's high-finance mindset, and shocks his coworkers with his plan to provide no-collateral loans to veterans. Andrews discovers that his wartime heroics don't really count for much in the postwar marketplace. And Russell has lost both of his hands in combat and has been fitted with hooks. Though he has become used to his handicap, it is harder for his family and his fiancee Cathy O'Donnell to adjust to Russell's wartime 'legacy'. Even though the immediate postwar years have long faded into history, this film retains its dramatic impact and poignancy.
